Garcia-Lopez took some time to talk to Multiverso DC about The Return of Donna Troy, back in 2005.
How was working with Jimenez and Pérez (as your inker) on “The Return of Donna Troy”?
Looking back now, the experience was highly positive. I must confess I’m not a big fan of “super teams”, it’s a continuous struggle to draw so many characters and keep clear compositions and story telling.

My big advantage for this project was that Jimenez and Perez know even the genetical structure of the characters:), so, I just followed Phil’s plot blindly and trusted George to fix any thing I might do wrong.

And George, of course, did a terrific job and I’m very thankful to him for bringing my pencils up to such meticulous and beautiful finishes.

In the same miniseries, there were some characters you did not know then?

I think I knew all of them…I guess I even drew them at some time in their different incarnations.

Perhaps you’re talking about “the Olympus Gods”? I suppose they were already created but I designed all of them from scratch for this story. That was good for me because I work better and happy with my own designs.

Once, you said that Donna Troy was one of your favourite characters to draw years ago. How was to work with her origin?

retornodedonna4You mean “my favourite Titans’ character” when I did it in the 80′s,right?

This time It was also a nice experience, and I was lucky I didn’t have to draw all the stars in her semi-new costume, by the way, those were Phil’s idea…always looking for a way to put more work in a page :-)

Once you said that it is better have not attachment to characters. You helped to create Kole, who became so popular with the fans back then and still until today. If she would return some day, would you like to work as artist in her return?

I designed her costume and it was accepted without any changes, Now, the face belongs to a real person. A friend at DC asked me to use her likeness for the character.

I don’t think I’d be interested in doing her again. It was a long time ago and I really didn’t build such a long lasting relationship with the character.

You know that there is a new relaunch of the team (Judd Winick and a lot of artists). I would like to know if you would work on Titans again.

When I did the Titans it was an “offer I couldn’t refuse”. As I said before already, team books are not my favourite kind of work.

Joe Bennett, exclusive artist of DC Comics, is a great fan of yours. He always used to talk about you as his inspiration in his interviews. He has been doing a great work on Terror Titans and there are fans that would love to see him working on the new series of Titans. Do you know him? What do you think about the idea of Bennett become the Titans regular artist?

Joe can do any kind of characters; he’s an accomplished artist who masters all the strings of a good super hero comic. He’s got talent and he’s young and energetic enough to develop even more his craft in years to come.

To finish, in what do you have been working today?

I’m finishing three issues of Batman Confidential.

Oginally, I was going to do both pencils and inks but because of deadlines problems,Kevin Nowlan will do the inks.(sounds good, isn’t it?).
Besides that I’m always working in new designs for the several DC’s Style Guides. This year alone I did more than fifty new figures for them.

Could you let a message for the Brazilian fans?

I’m lucky to have a few copies of old material published in Brasil, (Atari Force ,Batman/Hulk, Cinder & Ashe…) and to know that people over there appreciate my work is a great satisfaction for me. Thanks for your recognition and keep producing such fine artists all the way from Joao Motinni to Joe Bennet …and good football too :-)
